I am 28. I live in Chicago. My salary is $60,000 as a Nonprofit Consultant. Come see how I spend my coin!
I actually cut out a lot yet this is still on the long side, so be warned. Sorry in advance. SECTION ONE: ASSETS AND DEBT Retirement Balance: ~$4,740. $4,450 in a Roth IRA I opened when I turned 26. I just recently started contributing more to it regularly. I was previously focused on building my emergency savings up. My last job didn’t offer retirement until the very end of my time there, and there was no employer match. I contributed the bare minimum to my 401k; it has about $300 in it. With my current job, retirement match is factored into the salary. Equity: $0. Not a home owner. Savings account balance: $15,765. $1,150 in a Chase savings account, $13,519 in a HYSA, $1,046 in my Qapital account. Technically I use Qapital to save for taxes, but I know I won’t owe anywhere close to $1,000 since my 2020 freelancing was infrequent. I doubt it’ll even be up to $250. Checking account balance: $2,227 (payday was today!) Credit card debt: $0. I use my credit card like a debit card so I can rack up cash back. I pay it off every day. Student loan debt: $21,417. I graduated in 2015 with a BA in French and English. Original debt was ~$33,000. Before the pandemic my interest was 4.5%. Interest is now 0%. -- SECTION TWO:INCOME PROGRESSION2015-2016 - $15/hr as a remote intern for a major website. This was my first paid position out of college. I learned a lot about web content and writing for online audiences. This was part-time at 25 hours a week. 2016 - $2,700/month as a Content Writer. I created scripts and training materials for various companies to train their employees. Started this job in March and was unexpectedly laid off in December. Sucked at the time but turns out it was a blessing in disguise...The work was soulless and I didn’t like it. 2017 - ~$850/month stipend as an Americorps VISTA. At the start of the year I got a Development position at a nonprofit I volunteered at, hoping to gain grant writing experience. I absolutely would NOT have done this had I not been living at home. I also collected an additional $400 a month in unemployment until July since I was technically a federal volunteer, not an employee, therefore still eligible for benefits. 2017 - $37,000/year as a Development Coordinator, primarily writing grants. The person in this position left and I was asked to step in. I didn’t get my ed stipend since I ended my VISTA year 5 months early. 2018 - $38,250/year - COL raise. 2019 - $43,000/year then $45,000. I was promoted to manager. 2020 - $47,000/year - COL raise. 2020 - $60,000/year. I had been job hunting hard when COVID hit and I subsequently became discouraged. I was desperate to leave my job...the people I worked with were wonderful but I felt like my growth was stifled, the amount of staff turnover was draining, and our pay was below market rate. I ended up finding my new job through my network. I was very excited to not work in fundraising anymore. The events of 2020 confirmed that I didn’t want to make a career out of coaxing rich white folks to relinquish a tiny amount of their wealth to support youth of color. My now-boss and I talked extensively over Zoom before I received my offer letter in July. It’s been a great learning opportunity, even though starting a new job remotely is strange and sometimes lonely. Having a cat helps :) Main Job Monthly Take Home**:** $3,846. This is after $50 is deducted for Vision, Dental, Medical. Side Gig Monthly Take Home: $100-$400. I write product guides for a website sometimes. These days I only take on work if I’m anticipating new expenses that month. This income is in addition to my 60k salary, since what I make from my side hustle varies. Last year I made $2,200, the year before it was over $5,000. Other: ~$250/year in cash back from my credit card -- SECTION THREE: EXPENSES Rent: $1,025 in a decently-sized studio that I share with my cat. Rent encompasses all utilities, including internet. This is dropping down to $975 starting April 1 - yay! Renters Insurance: $5 Savings (monthly unless it says otherwise): ~$300 goes into a High Yield Savings Account. I automate $50 a week then throw in an extra $100 - $200, depending on the month. I save $80 - $120 with the Qapital app. I got it before they started charging so my account is free. Retirement contribution: $315- $415 into a Roth IRA. Maybe I should up payments so I can max it out, really torn between that or boosting student loan payments. I throw an extra hundred dollars in there some months. Debt payments: All I have is federal student loan debt. Since starting my job in July I’ve been paying $500/month, throwing in extra when I have it. I’m going to increase this to $600/month starting in February. Would love to have it paid off by the time I’m 30, or during my 30th year. I’m not holding my breath for student loan forgiveness, but if it starts to seem like a real possibility then I’ll cut back on payments. Donations: $300 to my mom and dad. I come from a working-class background and make more than both parents combined. My dad was unemployed for a while, and as I write this has become unemployed again. I worry a lot about my folks financially. In our culture it’s expected that we take care of our parents as they age, so there’s that component too. Also $25 to a local nonprofit. $9 to a local theater company for which I’m a board member. Our board is very low-key and not a fundraising one. Then usually ~$500 more throughout the year for various causes. Electric: Included in rent. Wifi/Cable/Landline: Included in rent. Cellphone: $43 Subscriptions: ~$63. $18 for Patreon, $10.89 for Spotify Premium, $16.34 for HBOMax, $7.62 for Disney+, $9.71 for Netflix. Pet expenses: I spend roughly $80 on food + probiotics and $20 on litter, which I buy in bulk. The monthly amount really fluctuates though. I’ve spent about $1,500 on my cat since I adopted her in October. Including getting basic stuff like a litter box, a cat tree, toys, food/water bowls, a carrier, etc. along with the adoption fee. I took her to the vet earlier last month and that was $450. She was vomiting frequently :( Car payment / insurance: $0. Car free, baby. Therapy: $100 Paid hobbies: $120 annually for my personal website. -- FINANCIAL BACKGROUND Was there an expectation for you to attend higher education? Did you participate in any form of higher education? If yes, how did you pay for it? Yes. I’m a child of immigrants and we place a high premium on education. Skipping college was never an option. Luckily, I’ve always done well in school and would have gone to college regardless. I think about grad school sometimes but there has to be a good ROI. Maybe one day. I borrowed 33k in student loans for undergrad, which isn’t that bad considering that I went to a private school that cost $200,000 over 4 years. I paid for the rest with work study, along with merit-based and need-based scholarships. Growing up, what kind of conversations did you have about money? Did your parent/guardian(s) educate you about finances? We didn’t discuss finances too often. I did get an allowance when I was younger and paid for the things I wanted (mostly books and CDs from my local Borders) by saving that money. My parents always had the mindset that credit cards can work as emergency funds...as an adult I strongly oppose that way of thinking. My parents accrued a lot of credit card debt and I never wanted that to be me. Which is why I only use my CC now as a debit card. I never put anything on there that I can’t pay off in full. What was your first job and why did you get it? I was in this program where teens get paid to participate in arts programs. I did theater for three years in HS, I think the stipend was ~$400 every two months. My first real job with wages was working retail the summer before college. I was making $8.25/hr. Both jobs were for spending money. Did you worry about money growing up? I didn’t worry necessarily, but I was aware that there were people with more than us. My mom was out of work for a few years due to some chronic pain and we had a Link card then. I had free/reduced lunch growing up and got fee waivers for all of my college apps. I was also aware of my privilege as an American citizen. My parents regularly sent money home to poorer family members. I learned early that it’s better to be working class here than it is over there. Do you worry about money now? Yes. I know I’m luckier than many. But I also have no generational wealth to inherit. Sometimes I feel really behind when I see people my age or younger with six figures in their retirement, $50,000 in stocks, or money passed down from family. I worry most about taking care of my parents in old age. I have an older brother so it’s a relief that we can at least share costs, when the time comes. At what age did you become financially responsible for yourself and do you have a financial safety net? I became 100% financially responsible when I moved out at age 25. Before then I was contributing $400/month towards rent. If I fell on really hard times I could probably move in with my folks, but otherwise I'm my own safety net. Do you or have you ever received passive or inherited income? If yes, please explain. My mom cashed out an $800 savings bond for spending money when I studied abroad in college, but otherwise nope. Day 1 - Wednesday morning Another dreary January day. It’s been consistently snowing for the past two days and very overcast to boot. I spend some time lazing in bed until my Mom unexpectedly calls to ask me if I can print out her worker’s comp form to see if she'll qualify for any. She contracted COVID from her job a few weeks ago and, thankfully, is recovering. I tell her I don’t have a printer and hang up, slightly annoyed, after telling her I’ll print it from the library later. This was the 4th day in a row of her calling me and conversations with her can be hard to cut short (I’m not an asshole, honest). I get up and feed my cat, E., her breakfast with a probiotic, take my gummy vitamins, and get ready for the day (brush teeth, moisturize face and hair, put on black skinny jeans and a navy and white speckled sweater with hoop earrings). I throw some sliced bananas, kale, frozen blueberries, honey, almond milk, and ginger into the blender for a smoothie. Once that’s poured into a glass I take a seat at my corner desk to begin my work day. Afternoon My foul mood lingers but I work through it. There’s a big deadline coming up soon so my days have been pretty full. E. climbs into my lap while I work and I give her some head rubs. I adopted her 4 months ago. There was a learning curve for me, as someone who grew up with 0 pets, but E.’s made it very worthwhile. She only recently began to "loaf" in my lap and I love it, even during inopportune moments like Zoom meetings. Lunchtime! Today it’s tomato basil soup I made over the weekend with open-faced grilled cheese on french bread. The bread is getting stale but it’s almost finished anyhow, and slathering it with cheese and butter works wonders. I put out the kitty’s lunch, too. E. eats some of it then jumps into my bed, curling up for a midday nap. Wish I could do the same. Sigh. I buckle down and get back to work, now doing somewhat-tedious data entry. After about an hour and a half I decide to walk to the library to print my mom’s forms. I order a Toasted White Hot Chocolate with almond milk from Starbucks ($4.60) so I have something warm to drink on my walk. I’m not a coffee drinker because of my caffeine sensitivity. Sometimes even a mug of black tea will make me lightheaded if I drink it too fast! Evening Work day is over. I outline my to-do list for tomorrow and cross off the things I accomplished today. My Dad is downstairs to pick up the forms I printed for my mom. After dropping off the forms I change into comfy clothes and assign myself a freelance assignment. I’m applying for a weekend writing workshop next month that will cost $300. I may not get in, but in case I do, I want to be prepared! The fun thing about my freelancing is that I get to choose the topics I want to write about. I select an assignment on skincare products. Time to make breakfast for dinner: smashed fingerling potatoes with sauteed bell pepper, red onion, and broccoli topped with a fried egg and half an avocado. Seasoned with Lawry's and drizzled with sriracha. I get cozy on my loveseat to eat dinner. I also send an email to a man I've been corresponding with daily, D, for the last month and a half. We met out of the blue on an online forum - not Reddit - and have been enjoying each other's online company :) I'm not rushing to label anything, especially since he lives a state away. We're just seeing where things go for now. For the rest of the evening I read my book while E. sleeps curled up next to me and Wendy Williams plays on TV. Then I get into my nighttime routine: smoke from my one hitter, put on some music and hop in the shower, where I also wash my face. Out the shower, I lotion up with shea butter and rub a gentle toner on my face. I make a mental note to re-up on weed soon. It's taxed to hell (welcome to Cook County. They tax everything here) but at least it's stimulating the local economy. I floss and brush my teeth before getting under the covers. TOTAL: $4.60 Day 2 - Thursday Morning My body naturally wakes me up around 7:30. I remain in bed, mostly browsing Reddit on my phone, before committing to getting out of bed. I feed E. her breakfast and daily probiotic, take gummy vitamins and clean the last of my dishes from the night before. The sun pours through my south-facing windows and my heart sings - yesss, let there be light! I brush my teeth, moisturize my hair with coconut oil and moisturize my face. I pick out a black ribbed turtleneck and black high-waist jeans to wear, but ultimately decide to rock my loungewear until I have to leave my apartment. I make a smoothie with the other avocado half from last night, frozen mango chunks, the last of my frozen blueberries, ginger, almond milk, and honey. I highly recommend avocados in smoothies. The creamy texture is to die for! I log into my work email and have a couple fires to put out. While I work, I polish off the rest of my Vitner’s Crunchy Kurls. IYKYK. I also reply to my email from D. this morning. Yesterday we were both in bad moods but this morning we’re doing better, mood wise. We talk about how rough our Januaries were - with my mom recovering from COVID and his dad in the hospital since the beginning of the year - and how we deserve a nice treat for getting through the month. We agree that lifetime supplies of books (for me) and movies (for him) would be fitting. afternoon My morning was full speed ahead but things are slowing down so I pause to read a Money Diary on here. I so admire this diarist’s conviction in language learning/maintenance! My French is dans la poubelle because I haven’t kept up in a long time. For a while I’d do Duolingo, watch French-language movies and shows on Netflix, and book trips to Francophone cities so I could practice speaking (last trip was Montreal in December 2018). When COVID blows over I want to go to Martinique. I remind myself to check out some French-language films soon. I’m open to any recommendations, especially media that focuses on Francophones outside of France, or those from immigrant communities :) I return to my data entry task. Giving away grants is fun. Tracking dollar amounts and grantee info with excel formulas, less so. I finish up the last of my soup and grilled cheese sandwich and give E. her lunch. I put on the student loan episode of Patriot Act as I eat. I’d truly be wowed if student loan forgiveness actually came to fruition. It’s either somewhat likely or not likely at all, depending on who you ask. Post-lunch, I’m craving cupcakes bad. Did I mention I have an unrelenting sweet tooth? I look up cupcakes near me and mentally bribe myself with a cupcake order if I get my work done. evening My cupcake craving has subsided. I'll see how I'm feeling tomorrow. I normally eat dinner around 7 or 8pm but opt for an early dinner today: my leftover Mongolian Beef and peapod tips in garlic sauce, yum. I ordered Chinese takeout on Sunday. While my rice cooks, I bundle up for a trip to Walgreens. When I'm there I get a big thing of Dawn dish soap, some antibacterial wipes that are on sale, a bag of roasted cashews, a Reese's Fast Break bar, and a small bag of Pirate's Booty ($16.83). By the time I get back my rice is nearly finished. My sink has some dirty dishes, so I wash those before reheating the Mongolian beef and peapod tips on my stove top. I'm one of those weirdos without a microwave… don't miss it at all though. I dig into my leftovers and reply to a message from D. which is quite imaginative. In the sexual sense ;) D. has a very sensual way with words and as a writer of course I'm into it. I go back for seconds, finishing the rest of my takeout leftovers. After dinner and some more reddit browsing I do my evening shower routine. At 10:30 pm my upstairs neighbor is annoyingly doing jumping jacks (that’s what it sounds like) or something that makes it very hard to focus. Ugh. TOTAL: $16.83 DAY 3 - Friday MorningI fell asleep unexpectedly and woke up around 2am. This kind of thing happens a lot. I guess my cat has adapted too, she’s always bugging me for food in the early morning hours. I feed my cat, brush my teeth, crawl back into bed and fall asleep an hour or so later. I’m up again at 7:30, laying in bed before officially getting up. My mom calls me and I remember I promised to order her a Lyft to work. Her workplace has the COVID vaccine and she’s going to get the first dosage. She mentions that some symptoms are coming back - like shortness of breath, which she didn’t even have the first time - even though she’s been on the mend for the past week and just got the go-ahead from her doctor to work again. After I order my mom the Lyft ($31.46 incl. tip) I indulge in my nasty habit of googling medical stuff. I find an article about a woman who ended up in the hospital unexpectedly, 5 MONTHS after getting symptoms. Cue cortisol levels going up. I also have a work meeting this morning that I’m nervous about, having never led it alone before. I get out of bed, feed my cat her breakfast + probiotic, take gummy vitamins, and get dressed with a black turtleneck, black jeans, and small hoop earrings. I try to breathe and remind myself that all will be fine. I have a habit of catastrophizing and generally thinking in worst-case scenarios, if that wasn’t already obvious. My meeting ends up going perfectly fine though, and my mom texts me later to say she took the train home (my Dad needed the car for work this morning). She is feeling fine for now. Since I skipped my morning smoothie I make one now with pear, kale, frozen strawberries, almond milk and honey. Eh, I’ve had better. But it’s drinkable. afternoon My morning flew! I’m running low on food so for lunch, I throw some crinkle cut fries in the oven. Grab an avocado, red onion, and a roma tomato from the fridge to make a quick guac. I also make a side of sriracha mayo. Today is payday. It’s my rent paycheck so I’m not as excited tho. While my fries are in the oven I move some money to my Roth IRA. I watch one of my favorite Youtubers, King of Reads, while I eat my lunch. He has an interesting take on Gamestop Gate and basically says, abolish all this stock market shit. I do think there are a lot of evils in American capitalism, which was literally built off the backs of s colonized peoples. Like is this system even for us? After lunch I get back to work. I also do something I seldom do: order groceries off Instacart. The anxiety of the day has drained me and I don’t feel like lugging a bunch of groceries home. Plus, the store I order from is cheaper than the one closest to me. I get some jasmine rice, a family pack of Nongshim ramen, green onions, carrots, zucchini, sirloin steak, ginger root, yellow onions, chili paste, bell peppers, white mushrooms, yellow squash, bok choy, kombucha, bamboo skewers, grape tomatoes, a bottle of Apothic Red and some hazelnut cookies. Add $10 for tip ($74.48). I do walk to the local grocery store anyway to 1) get some fresh air while it’s still daylight and 2) pick up smoothie ingredients. From there I get a big bag of frozen mixed berries, frozen mango chunks, an avocado, three bananas, almond milk, coconut sparkling water, and a sweet Belgian waffle ($18.15). Evening I knock out the last of my work tasks just in time for teletherapy at 5:10. I love my therapist. Been seeing her for going on three years and she’s changed my life. We talk and I feel lighter, remembering the progress I’ve made since I first walked into her office crying in 2018. After we hang up I get an email receipt for the cost, which is accounted for in monthly expenses. I put away my instacart delivery and message a bit more with D. Even though we’re just emailing, I truly enjoy his company. He makes me feel incredibly attractive and soft. Glass of red wine in one hand, I play with E. for 15 minutes. Despite her age (over 10) she’s spry and will bug the hell out of me to indulge her. I spend the rest of the evening on the couch decompressing with my wine. I do my nightly shower routine but skip the weed because I know it'll make me fall asleep ASAP. Then I fry up the rest of my breakfast for dinner ingredients (minus avocado and egg) and eat them with sriracha. TOTAL: $124.09 DAY 4 - Saturday morning Oops. Fell asleep and woke up at an odd hour. Again. Go brush my teeth and floss. My kitty is very awake and bugging me for attention so I smoke, play with her a bit, and go back to sleep. Wake up a few hours later. I hear the unmistakable retching of my cat throwing up. Maybe she went too long without food...I mop up the small puddle with paper towels and spray my rug liberally with Nature's Miracle. When I feed E. her breakfast + probiotic she keeps it all down. I take gummy vitamins and get back into bed. From my phone, I go to my local dispensary's website to place an order for pick up, ultimately choosing a strain I've had before that's on sale. I log into my checking account to transfer money to my mom (accounted for in monthly expenses). Actually get out of bed for real around 9:45am. Scoop E.’s litter box and prepare to get some freelance work done. I make a mango, pear and avocado smoothie with almond milk and honey and sit down to work. Girls plays in the background. I never watched this show when it was popular and was surprised by how funny it is (albeit problematic for a number of reasons). Afternoon Snack break! I brew some black tea and have it with the hazelnut cookies I got yesterday. 90 minutes later, once I’m two-thirds through my assignment, I make actual lunch: ramen noodles spruced up with minced garlic and ginger, scallion whites, bok choy, and mushrooms. All topped with scallion greens. Easy and d e l i c i o u s. There’s another snowstorm, urgh. I’m walking to pick up my weed and from my window, it doesn’t look too bad right now. Preorder a Honey Citrus Mint from Starbucks for the long walk ($3.27) and bundle up. It’s an hour round trip but I love walking and don’t really work out so...I take my exercise where I can get it. Stop by the ATM to withdraw cash for flower ($70). On my way back from picking up I indulge in a carrot cake slice from a popular bakery in the area. ($8.13 incl. tip). Okay, I’m set on sweets for awhile. For now :) Evening I finally wrap up my freelance assignment and share it with my editor. Shower time. Take a hit from my one hitter and do my nightly routine. Once finished, I change my mind on dinner. I’d originally planned to make a quick "bibimbap" (air quotes because it's very much a knock off) and even steamed rice ahead of time, but carrot cake is sounding good right now. Carrot cake it is! I have some more hazelnut cookies for a well-balanced meal. Give the kitty her dinner and fall asleep with the TV on. TOTAL: $81.40 DAY 5 - Sunday Morning Woke up at an odd hour again. (around 4 am). E. is being a butt once again so I feed her an early breakfast with her probiotic. Brush my teeth, floss, and go back to sleep for a few hours. Get up and out of bed for real around 9:30 and clean up a bit, doing one load of laundry and vacuuming my rug and floors. I finally cook and eat the bibimbap meant for yesterday (minus the egg). I have a virtual date with a college friend I haven’t spoken to in a while, so we spend a few hours catching up! My friendship with her is ever-evolving. She was someone I put on a pedestal for a long time, until she disappointed me when I really needed her and hurt me deeply. I’ve worked to let go of that resentment and remind myself that 1) she is very much human, 2) she is not a better person than I am and 3) I can’t expect everyone to have the same heart that I have. Tough but necessary lessons to learn. Afternoon I really should deep clean E’s litter box today but ehhhh, not feeling it. I clean my bathtub, bathroom sink and mirror instead and wipe down some surfaces. I also sip some red wine blended with frozen strawberries (10/10, would recommend!) and start meal prepping for later. I’m making suya - West African meat skewers - so I thinly slice my sirloin steak while it’s semi-frozen and refrigerate the rest to fully defrost. I also chop up more garlic, ginger, bok choy, mushrooms, and scallions for ramen later. I know I’m going to get high very soon and won’t want to do too much, so I’m doing what future high-me will thank me for. Light an oudh incense stick, reply to a message from D., and submit my $250 invoice for freelance work. Put food out for E. The snow is still pouring in from yesterday. Maybe we’ll get those 10 inches of snow after all. I smoke a bit and cook the same ramen as yesterday but add a fried egg and some sesame oil. I inhale the whole thing and drink all the broth, either it's really this amazing or I'm just stoned. For dessert, I brew black tea and have it with the rest of my hazelnut cookies. evening Shower routine time! As much as I hate cleaning the bathtub, that first shower afterwards is the best. Wash my hair with Aussie Moist conditioner (I keep my hair very short and cut it myself) and moisturize with copious coconut oil. Listen to one of my favorite podcasts while in the shower, Say Your Mind with Kelechi Okafor. I love listening to her and her brother’s banter, it feels like I'm among friends. I've been eating throughout the day so I'm not too hungry come dinner time. I have some crinkle cut fries with sriracha mayo and crack open a kombucha. Rewatch more old episodes of Girls. Why is Adam Driver so attractive to me, even if his character on the show is awful (they're all awful, really)? TOTAL: $0 Day 6 - Monday morning Odd sleep hours strike again! I should mention that I also brush my teeth while I’m in the shower, lest you think I brush once a day only :) Take gummy vitamins and give my nagging E. her early morning meal after playing with her a bit. Scroll on Reddit until I fall back asleep. Get up and start the day for real at 8:40. Clean a few dirty dishes from last night and give E. breakfast, round #2 with her probiotic. Brush my teeth moisturize my hair, and choose an oatmeal, knee-length knit dress to wear with small hoop earrings. I make a smoothie with a navel orange, some frozen strawberries, frozen banana that I almost forgot about, and almond milk. It’s February now. Happy Black History/Present/Future Month. February is actually one of my least favorite months but after the January I’ve had, I’m ready to move on swiftly. E. is fascinated by all the snowblowing that our neighbors do outside the window. Chicago hasn’t been hit this hard with snow in 5 years - 9 inches! This is a very slow morning, work wise. Snack on cashews. Work on some excel data and open a tab for Girl Scout Cookies. It’s that seasonnnn. Note that there’s a four box minimum to get cookies. I’ll save my cookie order for next week. afternoon The sunlight is giving me life today. I’m getting my Vitamin D through the window, though a walk to the beach sounds lovely. After doing a bit more work, it’s lunch time. I steam some jasmine rice and fry carrots, zucchini, mushrooms, bok choy, and scallion whites in soy sauce and chili paste for my knockoff bibimbap. With an egg this time. Then I decide to bundle up and walk to the beach for additional vitamin D. I only live five minutes away :) . The sand and shoreline are all covered in snow but peaceful nonetheless. I've actually never been to the beach in the dead of winter before. God, I love Lake Michigan. Never understood the hype around oceans, especially because you can't drink the water. Have my phone check in with my boss. Message a bit with D. and round up my tasks for the day. evening D. encouraged me to follow my impulses and order the greasy pizza I’m craving right now. But I have food in the fridge. Sigh. Cut up my veggies and season them for veggie kabobs to go with the suya, which has marinated in a spice rub. Put the veggies and meat on skewer sticks and put it all in the oven. It comes out…okay-ish. The meat is a bit overdone and not as flavorful as I'd hoped. Not terrible for a first try, I suppose. Eat two veggie kabobs and two suya sticks. Fall down the Reddit rabbithole for way too damn long. Also check on my mom and how she's doing. She said she's okay now, taking things one day at a time. Feed the kitty her dinner. Do my nighttime routine (including brushing my teeth) and snuggle in bed to watch more Girls. Snack on graham crackers since I have no other sweets or candy handy. TOTAL: $0 Day 7 - Tuesday morningMe and my fucked up sleep schedule. No judgment, plz. Wake up at an odd hour again, brush my teeth, feed the cat, smoke a bit, and go back asleep. My mom calls me at 8 to tell me she might need me to call her a Lyft again - this is not a typical nor regular expense btw - because she has one of her work trainings and my Dad took the car for work. She asks if I still want to go to Nigeria this summer since she’s about to get tickets. IDK! I’m not comfortable traveling internationally...but my Nigerian passport also expires this year and it was a huge pain in the ass to get it in the first place. I enjoy visiting, though I always have a lot of personal shit to navigate while there. Being part of a diaspora is complicated. Also wake up to a steamy message from D. Steamy enough for me to get myself off, truly the best way to start any morning. My period has started...fun. I was expecting it though. Feed E. her breakfast with a probiotic, take gummy vitamins, brush my teeth, moisturize hair, and get dressed in a grey turtleneck, black Adidas soccer pants, and gold hoop earrings. Blend frozen mango chunks, a small banana, greek yogurt and almond milk into a smoothie. I also brew a cup of lemon tea. Pop two ibuprofen and start my work day with a staff meeting. afternoon Light a candle and keep working! Ok, I actually break for a few YouTube videos, one from MelinaPendulum about the Sex And the City reboot. To sum it up: why do one?? What’s the point if Samantha isn’t even coming back? I put out E.’s lunch. I also steam some jasmine rice to eat with the suya and veggie kabobs from last night. Damn I wish I had some steak sauce. Oh well. Eat lunch and call a Lyft for my mom. ($25.99, incl. tip). Work with more Sex and the City in the background. EveningThe work day has ended and I am desperately in need of snacks! I load $10 on my Starbucks app and then decide to not get anything. I planned to fuck up some hot chocolate but the way my cramps are fading and coming back, it’s best to stay away from a drink with 57 grams of sugar. Pick up some Lysol wipes, a bottle of club soda, Fig Newtons, Ritz Crackers to go with the block of cheese in my fridge, a Reese’s Fast Break bar, and some Haribo Happy Cola gummies. ($11.69) Get home, pour a small glass of Apothic Red and play with E. for a little bit. Then go down another Reddit rabbithole before making my dinner - ramen, minus the egg. Still delicious! Message D. for a bit and do my shower routine. I did not read very much this week, maybe it’s a testament to me not liking my book that much? Hmmm....my neighbor starts his incredibly annoying exercise routine and I fall asleep waiting for it to stop. TOTAL: $47.68 -- GRAND TOTAL = $274.60 Food + Drink = $133.37 Fun / Entertainment = $70 Home + Health = $13.78 Other = $57.45 All in all, this was an unsurprising week, especially since I’m already in the habit of tracking expenses daily. The two atypical things were the Lyft rides for my mom - an infrequent occurrence - and my weed purchase, which happens once monthly. I suppose I could have included that in my monthly expenses. Please don’t roast me for my sleep schedule! I know issa mess. Also, I feed my cat four times a day in case that’s unclear. Edit: Any and every time I left my home I wore a mask and then washed my hands thoroughly upon return.

Look at the first comment below for the winner of the 21st album giveaway plus details on this week's album up for grabs! What is Nugu?: While in Korean it literally means 'Who' in the broader Kpop context it refers to groups that are generally unknown amongst the greater public. It doesn't have to mean they're extremely new, though it can, and there are of course varying degrees of 'unknown' which some groups having very strong niche fandoms and others being almost invisible. Trivia: Member Changyu was originally going to debut with ACE (not to be confused with A.C.E) but something happened that resulted in him leaving the company. Minho of MY.st was associated with the group while they were promoting in Taiwan. The group says that they almost disbanded multiple times before the release of their Korean debut song Timeless due to various difficulties. The choreography for Timeless was changed three times before the song was released so it was especially difficult to learn as there had been so many different versions. The members knew each other previous to UNVS so they say they have a good relationship though there are of course always challenges that come from different opinions. The group's greatest desire is to perform in front of live crowds and go on a tour once the COVID pandemic has ended. ________________________________________________________ SOLOIST OF THE WEEK SEORI Who is she?: Seori is a female soloist singesongwriter under ATISPAUS Entertainment. She initially gained attention through song covers via her YouTube Channel. Company: ATISPAUS Entertainment is a new company with Seori as their debut artist. Song: Released simultaneously with the official title track, this song features an R&B and jazz influence along with the use of a vocoder to evoke a drowsy and dreamy rose-tinted nostalgic feeling. Seori says she was inspired by how memories are often warmer and more comforting than reality, and came up with the melody while drying her hair and thinking back to how her parents would stroke and dry her hair as a child and how comforting she remembered it being.
Composers/Producers:Seori (original artist), GRAPHIX (see above)
First Comeback: December 16th, 2020 with Trigger (MV)
Song: Her first digital single, this R&B/EDM crossover is meant to show a different side to Seori. She says that while her debut EP showed her dreamy and wistful side, this release is meant to show her impulsive and provocative side.
Composers/Producers:Seori (original artist), GRAPHIX (see above)
Trivia: ATISPAUS Entertainment discovered Seori through her YouTube cover channel and approached her about debuting with the company. She had been writing songs previously but had wanted to partner with someone and found that ATISPAUS aligned with her artistic sensibilities. ATISPAUS also works with visual artists, writers, and film makers and has an ambitious plan for a long-term cross-platform and cross-media promotional strategy with her. She says that her debut EP took over a year to create, and the concept changed and evolved due to the COVID pandemic, solidifying around a concept of being trapped in an unpleasant reality and wanting to find escape. The MVs for Running Through the Night and Hairdryer were conceived together and meant to be interconnected. The company also released a novella to expand upon Seori lore. She is a big fan of Avril Lavigne and Billie Eilish and wants to explore a variety of musical genres in the future. ________________________________________________________ IN MEMORIAM YEAR 7 CLASS 1 Who were they?: A seven member girl group under Dareun Byeol Entertainment, the only group the company is confirmed to have promoted. The company was founded by an ex-SM Entertainment choreographer who had worked closely with Shinwa. Debut: January 24th, 2014 with Oppa Virus (MV) Live Stage (Link) Dance Practice (Link)

Song: The lead single from the group's first EP "Believe" this mid-tempo pop song features some funky moments in the bassline along with a soft vocal presentation amidst some chanted aegyo vocals. The song is meant to comfort those who feel they've been marginalized by society.
Composers/Producers:Ahn Hyungseok (see above), 100 Days (see above)
Fifth Comeback: January 12th, 2017 with Please Remember Me (MV)
Song: After more than a year since their last release, the group released this digital single featuring an MV of past performance clips. This beautiful and heartfelt ballad features simple piano accompaniment and allows the vocals of the members to shine. This would be the last original song released by the group, and was not promoted. As goodbye songs go, it's one of the more lovely ones I've heard.
Composers/Producers:Ahn Hyungseok (see above), 100 Days (see above)
Final Special Release: May 10th, 2017 with Oppa Virus (Acoustic Version) (MV) and Always (Acoustic Version) (MV)
Songs: Acoustic reworks of the group's first two releases (and the third version of Always) these show a more mature side of the group, though not without some melancholy.
YouTube Channel:Year 7 Class 1 Official Active Between: January 2014 - Sometime in 2018. Reasons for Disbanding: It's assumed that the company supporting the group went out of business. The group began promoting almost exclusively in Japan from 2016 onward, leaving Korean fans feeling as if they'd been abandoned. During 2018 the group's fan cafes stopped updating and the company pulled out of a scheduled event at the last minute. The members were then later seen to be engaging in personal activities. Trivia: The group faced several controversies during their run. The group was accused of promoting sexuality with a minor concept, and during a live festival performance in 2015 the leader of the group Baek Sehee went on stage without safety shorts exposing her underwear. The official explanation was that the group had arrived at the concert with their Maknae missing her safety shorts so the leader gave her hers since their Maknae was a minor. Some netizens believed however that it was a ploy to get fancams of the group to blow up as had recently happened with EXID's Hani. The group also faced backlash for the official role of one of the members being 'Bread Shuttle' which is someone who runs to grab lunch for others in the group and is connected with school bullying in Korea. The group however stated that they wanted to expose school bullying activity to create action against it, and were not trying to glorify it. The group attempted several concerts in Korea in 2017 after having had success promoting in Japan. However since it had been so long since promoting in Korea their fanbase had shrunk, and they were unable to fill even 50-seat auditoriums. Their final concert, for which they had rented a 200 seat auditorium based on positive comments being found on their fan cafe site, ended up with fewer than 50 people attending. Since disbanding members of the group have been involved in activities such as trot singing, modeling, and musical acting. ________________________________________________________ That's it for today, let's get the discussion on! As always, if you have any suggestions for groups, content, or things you'd like to see, please let me know in the comments below. Also as always, a big shout-out to u/not-named-in-credits for founding nugutown and u/sharnaranwan for continuing the work over there.

I just ordered Korean for the first time, and don't understand what was delivered. What goes with what?
The menu just had names without descriptions. Here's what I ordered: agedashi tofu, BBQ eel, beef tongue, bibimbap, japchae, and calamari. I received all of that, but in addition there were: 3 containers of rice, one condiment cup of what might be peanut oil, a 2nd cup of what also appears to be peanut oil but with salt, a condiment cup of a sauce with the color and texture of ketchup but it's spicy, a condiment cup of jalapeños, a condiment cup of sweet cucumbers, a condiment cup of onion bits with red orange spice and some confusing strings, a condiment cup of what seems like spiced jicama, a condiment cup of a tasty red paste, and, most confusingly, a bag of intact lettuce leaves. What goes with what? I don't want to eat it wrong.
Does anyone else find they are regularly disappointed when eating out because they could make the meal better themselves?
I have 3 kids and a mortgage, so we don't eat out often. But when we do I often find myself disappointed with my meal as I know I can make it better myself with plain ingredients I have at home. We had some Thai food recently and while it wasn't exactly bad, it just wasn't that good. There was way too many noodles and not enough vegetables. It wasn't spicy enough and it was too sweet (probably just a sauce from a jar...) Very similar experience when I grabbed a curry from an Indian street stall. The whole dish was just very ordinary and just didn't have much going for it. It's not every time though - sometimes I'm completely blown away when eating out. I had a bibimbap meal recently that was just unreal. I was genuinely upset when the bowl was empty. Same goes for nearly every single burger I get from my local burger joint. Way better than what I can make at home.
An Ode to Meal Planning, or: How I Learned to Stop Wasting and Love the Leftovers
So, I love food, and I consider myself pretty adultish, except for the fact that every week I wound up wasting something that's in my fridge while "having nothing to cook". The parsley that I optimistically bought thinking I am Le Chef Sophistique, or the greens that never made it to any sandwich but I bought them because I should eat more veggies, or the bread slices that turned into trash instead of croutons. I hate throwing away food, but I also never planned out what I was going to eat for the entire week. How?? Why??? After many years of skating by as a decent cook who YOLOed grocery shopping and breakfast, my pre-frontal cortex is finally fully developed and I have reached an age where skipping meals turns me into a houseplant. Meal planning takes work and forethought, and sounds like a thing that grandmas do. But, it legit saves you time that you would spend with your head in the fridge wondering what to make for dinner, and it saves you money at the grocery store since you aren't buying shit that you don't have a plan for. "How did shoddybeta do it?" I hear you wonder. Well, kids, the secret is a whiteboard and a list of tasty shit you want to make. To figure out the tasty shit, I started by thinking about stuff I love to make and eat, then I bought one (1) cookbook. (The cookbook is Thug Kitchen and you should go read it. Or read the blog.) Top it off with Cookie and Kate and you got a recipe (hehehe) for tummy-rumbling inspiration. Once a week (or when your fridge is looking kinda empty and sad), sit down, and think to yourself "what kinda tasty shit do I want to eat soon?" For me, the choices shift seasonally; wintertime (now-ish) is all soups, stews, and casseroles. The bulk of the work is done with the whiteboard:
On the whiteboard, list out what you currently have in the fridge that you need to eat - veggies, pre-cooked grains, half-full jars of pasta sauce, whatever.
Next, I think about what would be real tasty with the leftover . Got some leftover rice, neat - would I rather do fried rice, or bibimbap, or, like, fish fillet with rice and roasted broccolini? Got some leftover stock because I was trying to make fucking fancy ass ramen - should I make minestrone, or basic ass tomato soup, or use it for risotto or some shit? Don't worry about getting 100% coverage on your random refrigerator stuff, but be willing to dress up your normal food in a new way. Bonus points if you can kill multiple leftovers with one meal idea. Whatever you come up with, write it down. Also, fun fact: the three foolproof catch-all dishes for random shit in your fridge are fried rice, stir fry, and minestrone. Consolation prize goes to taco salad.
While you're at it, check your freezer! Did you forget about the lasagne you made 2 months ago? Defrost that fucker.
Still need more shit to eat that week? I normally pick one decadent-ass meals (think, big pan of lasagna), and pick two easiesimpler proteins.
Does your list looks like it's on the Atkins diet? Figure out what kind of veggies you want to go with your meat and taters.
Pick one thing to make for breakfast besides cereal (for me, it's usually a baked good like muffins or a set-and-forget thing like overnight oats or chia pudding).
Then: MAKE YOUR GROCERY LIST BASED OFF THE MEAL LIST. Just like, google a recipe, and figure out what you need that you don't already have, and write those things down, and bookmark that recipe so you can actually make it when you're ready. A mind-blowing concept, I know. But, here's the thing: it took me 10 YEARS of adult life to figure out that you do plan your list around your meals, not vice versa. And I'm way happier now.
So what seems to be better? UR’s with 0* or SR with 1-2? And is a 5 R better than a 0* UR? I have Crab Long Bao as my tank, but didn’t know if he should stay or if I need a 5* Tom Yum until I ascend CLB once or twice. Same with Milk. I have Bibimbap too. Also, I’ve got the fallen angels under control on what goes with what 😁 this is just some questions I’ve had that I can’t find answers to anywhere
I'm 20M in college studying computer science. I'm in a relationship with a really smart therapist to-be <3 and I have a kitten named Salem (she's all black and very smol). My parents also live near me and they have a dog named Tank (anatolian shepherd mix) and a cat name Shady (black/white tuxedo). I spend a lot of time thinking (that probably sounds weird but it's ok I am weird) and I also spend a lot of time watching random documentaries and youtube essays on a wide array of topics. I just like listening to people who are passionate about whatever it is they are in to. Some of my hobbies are turning (woodworking), my cat, programming, photography, cooking, driving, hiking and horseback riding (just to name a few) I text a lot, so much so that I basically type gibberish and my keyboard's AI still knows what I mean. I enjoy contemplating the mysteries of the universe and the limits of human understanding and experience. I also enjoy smoking weed (probably not a surprise) and I've been known to enjoy (allegedly) some lucy and molly as well ;) I'm pretty scatterbrained if you couldn't tell so I apologize in advance if I give you verbal whiplash, my brains just going 1000mph at all times. I'm also a huge foodie, some of my favorite dishes: any curry, tom yum, pho, tom kha, bibimbap, sushi, chicken adobo, tortang talong, lumpia, pancit, biryani, gyros, the list goes on... Hope to hear from someone :) P.S. I'd prefer women/LGBT friens, I've never really gotten along with straight men (sorry) (٥↼_↼)
Looking for a vegetarian or vegan main feature of a meal
I've been trying to cook a lot more vegetarian stuff the last year or two and loving it, but I find that most of the veggie stuff I cook is a whole meal in and of itself. So I'll do chillies, curries, soups, pasta, risotto, bibimbap, stir fry, lentil one pots etc, what I'm looking for is something that goes with side dishes. Looking at what I have in the kitchen, I'm wanting to make a meal with zaalouk and tenderstem broccoli as sides, typically I'd pair this kind of meal with a steak or some kind of meat fillet but I'd love some meat free options if anyone had any. Thank you!

She says if she hadn't become a singer she would've become a zookeeper or a DJ. She couldn't decide between using Y or J from her name for her stage name but liked the look of J better. She got sick from drinking too much milk as a child and now dislikes it, so she pours juice over her cereal instead. When going out to eat she prioritizes quantity over quality. She has a cat named Ruben. She used to pretend to go to the bathroom but sneak out to buy kimbap at the convenience store when she was a trainee. She likes to relieve stress by playing gun games and fishing. She says she'd be in House Slytherin if she was in the Harry Potter Universe.
Dalyn
Position: Main Rapper, Lead Dancer, Vocalist
Real Name: Lee So Hyun
Age: 20 (IA)
Facts: She is from Cheongju, a city in the mountainous region in central South Korea, however she moved to Seoul for college and to become a trainee. She was a former trainee of JT Corea Entertainment (Oh!Bliss) and FAB Entertainment (Chloris and Blah Blah). Her stage name comes from 'Darling' but was adapted to make it more fun. She is currently on a leave of absence from Kyung Hee University's department of practical dance. She is said to resemble Ji-Hyun of 4Minute. She has practiced boxing and has developed muscles from her training. She is the best at cleaning the dorms in the group. Her favorite foods are iced americanos and dakgangjeong (sweet and spicy fried chicken). She's a fan of (G)-IDLE's Soyeon and would like to be able to produce music like her. She also admires SNSD and would like to collaborate with Taeyeon one day.
Raon
Position: Lead Dancer, Vocalist
Real Name: Lee Seo Young
Age: 20 (IA)
Facts: She is from Suwon, an ancient walled city just outside of Seoul. She was previously a trainee at All-S company and was set to debut with All-S girls, but the group disbanded before they could debut. Her membership in the group was teased in the first ANS MV Wonderland, and she made her official debut with the group in their second release Boom Boom. She is used to her beauty attracting attention and says that in high school people would stop and stare as she walked by. She wanted a Korean stage-name so picked Raon, which means 'Joy'. Her nicknames include Rapunzel and Fairy, but her favorite nickname is tteok tteok, which means rice cake. She is the most stylish member and helps the others pick out stylish clothes. Her favorites foods are milk, meat, and bread, but she hates vegetables and will only eat corn and tomatoes. She's especially fond of french fries and always eats them first before touching her entree at a fast food place. She's ranked Korean fast-food fries as Mom's Touch first, followed by KFC and Burger King. She has been a trainee since 16 and likes to just relax and watch movies when she's on vacation.
Bian
Position: Lead Vocalist, Main Dancer
Real Name: Yu Ji Won
Age: 19 (IA)
Facts: She is from Seoul. She was a pre-debut member of MIDNIGHT, but left after two months to join ANS. Her stage name comes from her hair being very damaged when she was a trainee, the other members said it was as bad as doll's hair, and so she was named 'Bian' as a shortening of 'Bibi Doll Vivian' (which I assume is a doll popular in Korea). She is an accomplished Akido athlete and was the highest ranked woman in her dojo. Her favorite foods are sushi and pickled radish, but she's recently also fallen in love with gopchang (grilled intestines). She says she can eat the most in the group and never gain weight. She trained as a dancer for 10 years prior to debut. Her role models are BoA, Chungha, and and Hyuna. She says that seeing BoA perform when she was young made her want to become a singer.
Dam I
Position: Lead Dancer, Vocalist
Real Name: Hong Da Young
Age: 19 (IA)
Facts: She is from Seoul. She says she was surprised after returning home after their debut and hearing Boom Boom on the radio. She likes watching mukbang videos to find good restaurants. She likes big dance moves and dislikes doing ballet. Her favorite food is malatang (Chinese spicy and numbing hot pot) but she's also a fan of chicken and can identify brands by smell. Her favorite Kdrama is Crash Landing on You. She respects the group April a lot. She's a big fan of Wendy from Red Velvet's OST song Goodbye.
Haena
Position: Lead Dancer, Vocalist, Maknae
Real Name: Jeon Eun Bi
Age: 18 (IA)
Facts: She is from Seoul. She was one of the last two members to join the group along with J for Say My Name. She says she was very nervous coming in late to the group and being the youngest member, but has been welcome warmly by the others and gets along especially well with Dalyn. She says learning to adapt to the other members styles of dancing quickly was the most difficult part. She is a big fan of Sunmi and wants to do a dance cover of Gashina. Her favorite is chocolate ice cream. She doesn't like coffee so drinks hot chocolate when she goes to a cafe. She wants to learn how to pole dance. She likes wearing blackberry scent.
Pre-Debut-Debut: August 16th, 2019 with Wonderland (MV) Live Stage (Link) Choreography Video (Link)
Song: Technically a pre-debut release, it did get an MV and saw promotion on music shows alongside their later official debut Boom Boom. The song is light and tropical and describes the desire to travel and escape the tough day to day challenges of life. The sixth member of the group, Raon, was teased at the end of the MV and she took part in the live Wonderland promotions.
Composers/Producers: Eun Jong Tae (은종태) (Chen - Amaranth, Yoon Mirae - Touch Love, Kim Wooseok - Somebody Like You), Choi Chun Gon (최천곤) (Chen - Amaranth), Park Jayoung (no other credits found)
Official Debut: September 16th, 2019 with Boom Boom (MV) Live Stage (Link) Dance Practice (Link)
Song: Their official debut single, the song opens with a dramatic rock instrumental before sliding into a moombahton dance rhythm. The MV seems to take inspiration from SNSD's Into the New World with the girls being shown devoting their time and efforts into individual passions before coming together in the end. The MV also teases a new member in a stinger clip at the end.
Composers/Producers: Nako (나코) (Unicorn - HUK, BLACK6IX - Call My Name), Ma Jung Hoon (마정훈) (Astro - You're My World), Kim Jung Yup (김정엽) (Astro - You're My World)
Most Recent Comeback: January 10th, 2020 with Say My Name (MV) Live Stage (Link) Choreography Video (Link)
Song: A high-energy uptempo EDM Dance song, this is their first official comeback. This marked the official debut of the group's 7th and 8th members J and Haena, and showed an marked increase in budget. Once again a new member is teased in an after-video stinger clip, though her identity has yet to be revealed.
Trivia: While Royeon is officially the leader of the group, they make decisions democratically and by merit when it comes to vocals and dance where the strongest member in that area will take the lead. Half of the group has birthdays in February. Pre-debut all of the girls shared a single room in the dorm, but now J, Dalyn, and Raon share a room, Bian, Royeon and Dam I share another, Lina has her own room, and Haena lives at home. The group finished a Makestar Campaign at 829% of goal, with the majority of their support coming from China and the United States, which is an especially large amount of support from China for a group without a Chinese member. The group has worn an abnormally large variety of stage outfits in their performances, especially for a large rookie group from a small company as each custom stage outfit can cost up to $600. The group has joked that their company's facility may be haunted as they've had a computer randomly turn on and start playing dance beats without anyone touching it and another time Dam I felt someone tuck her hair behind her ear when no one else was around. ________________________________________________________ Soloist of the Week JUNE Who is he?: June is a male soloist, singesongwriter, composer, and producer under Planetarium Records, he is part of the project-group PLT along with Gaho (who recently broke out with his OST for Itaewon Class). Have You Eaten? Tteokbokki (떡볶이 - Spicy Stir-Fried Rice Cakes)
Welcome to the third serving of Have You Eaten? This month our chosen snack of the month is Tteokbokki! Also known as Spicy Stir-Fried Rice Cakes, tteokbokki is commonly seen in dramas as it is one of the most popular street food snacks around. It is a cheap snack for anyone on the go. You’ll often see characters picking it up when in a rush or if they are stressed out by life. It stands out on the screen as its sauce is bright red but it wasn’t always that way… A Brief History of Tteokbokki Tteokbokki wasn’t originally a dish of the common folk as it is today, the earliest known recorded version of Tteokbokki was found in a 19th century cookbook, “Siuijeonseo”, in which it was known as “steokbokgi”. It was a soy sauce based rice cake dish served with beef and available vegetables such as scallions which was exclusively served to Joseon royalty during the first month of the year. This is now known as “Royal Court Tteokbokki”. Funnily enough tteokbokki as we now know it was developed by accident. Back in the 1950’s when Ma Bok Lim accidentally dropped a rice cake into some hot sauce and found it so delicious that a new snack was born. She started selling it in Sindang and eventually it became the tteokbokki we know and love today. This area is now known as “Tteokbokki Town” and is full of famous tteokbokki restaurants including the original Maboklim Tteokbokki. They host festivals and competitions there from time to time. Types of Tteokbokki Tteokbokki is typically made with small pieces of the long cylindrical rice cake, commonly known as tteokbokki tteok (tteokbokki rice cakes). It is usually served in a sauce and is most commonly served with some combination of boiled eggs, fish cakes, and scallions. There are many different versions available in street market stalls and dedicated restaurants. Here are a few of the more common ones you might find:
Gungmul tteokbokki - a soupier version of standard tteokbokki
Gireum tteokbokki - a drier version of standard tteokbokki in which tteok are fried in oil and served with very little sauce. This version is famously found at Seoul’s Tongin Markets (across from Gyeongbokgung Palace).
Ra-bokki - standard tteokbokki served with ramyeon
Cheese tteokbokki - standard tteokbokki that is either topped with cheese or where the rice cakes themselves are stuffed with cheese
Royal court tteokbokki (gungjung-tteokbokki) - gangang (soy sauce) is a less common non spicy option
Jjajang tteokbokki - jjajang (black bean sauce) is a sweeter savoury option
Curry tteokbokki - tteokbokki tteok in a yellow Korean style curry sauce
Cream tteokbokki - tteokbokki tteok in a carbonara sauce
Dramas with memorable Tteokbokki Scenes Like with the previous foods we have discussed, tteokbokki is seen in so many dramas, here are a few that have stood out to me: My favourite tteokbokki scene of all comes from one of my favourite dramas, Radiant Office. It features a scene in which the lead, Eun Ho Won, and one of the side characters, Seo Hyun, go to eat tteokbokki as eating spicy foods is one known method of combating stress. They order four ascending levels of heat. As they eat the differently spiced tteokbokki they share one thing that has been stressing them out and release their stress, until they reach the ultimate spice level four. Throughout the process the characters get to know one another a little better and become closer. At the time of my first watch I hadn’t tried tteokbokki so I couldn’t really imagine how spicy that tteok could get, now I fully understand their pain and love the scene even more. The Heirshad a storyline in which a tteokbokki restaurant was a very symbolic place to one of the characters, Choi Yeong Do, as a result there were quite a few meaningful scenes shot there throughout the drama. Sadly, a lot of tteokbokki was wasted in the process. Pegasus Marketfeatures a really fun tteokbokki storyline in which the heir to the company whose only happy childhood memories revolve around tteokbokki decides to have a go at creating his own tteokbokki franchise. Everyone is too afraid to tell him how incredibly awful his tteokbokki is and there are some pretty amazingreactions to the tteokbokki allround (especially since this one is based on a webtoon). How the market deals with the problem is great too. Finally Let’s Eat 2’s leading lady, Baek Soo Ji had a childhood trauma when it came to overeating tteokbokki that caused her to be unable to eat it. After a day of starving herself on a date she comes across Gu Dae Young who is snacking on it for the second time that day and steals his meal before realising what she’s done. Understandably he was annoyed by this. What dramas have scenes that have stood out to you? Personal experiences with Tteokbokki I won't lie, I’m not the hugest fan of tteokbokki. I keep trying it thinking maybe this time I’ll love it, but I think it is kind of like Vegemite in which you need to be brought up eating it to really get it. It’s usually either too fishy, too spicy, or too chewy for me. Thanks to Hi! School - Love On here is an accurate depiction of my initial impressions and attempts to eat tteokbokki with chopsticks. The first time I bought it, I got a humongous plate of “cheese tteokbokki”, it took me a really long time to eat half of it (the cheesy half). I don’t think I ate it again until I went to Korea where I ate quite a lot considering my feelings about it. Most memorably of all with u/MerinoMedia I visited Dooki in Hongdae, a chain which were prominently featured in quite a few dramas around 2017/2018 including My ID is Gangnam Beauty one of the rare occasions they weren’t eating tonkatsu! I really had to try the cheese ring and it was seriously cheesey. OMG. So much cheese. But it was truly a lot of fun trying all the different types of rice cakes. I also had some tteokbokki at the Tongin Market but I don’t think it was gireum tteokbokki, just standard tteokbokki. It was super spicy but somehow I managed to eat it all without crying. I haven’t tried to make my own tteokbokki, but in preparation for this post I got some instant kinds to try. So far I have tried the Jjajang flavoured one which was not great and as a bonus it exploded in my microwave. I’ve decided to hoard the rest in case I get trapped inside my house for a while and need some excitement one day. What types of tteokbokki have you tried? What were you experiences? Has anyone tried the original tteokbokki at "Tteokbokki Town"? Or have you ever made your own tteokbokki from scratch or pre prepared ingredients? What’s the Next Course? Our April snack needs to be chosen! This month we will be choosing between three different foods/drinks, cider (soda), bibimbap (mixed rice), and gimbap. PLEASE VOTE FOR YOUR FAVOURITE HERE. I’ll leave the vote open until this Friday’s Weekend Wrap-up post goes live then announce the winner there. Our next post will be on the 26th of April 2020. Until then come and share your experiences whether they are limited to drooling over tteokbokki be it simply on screen or more in the comments below.
Have You Eaten? Chimaek (치맥 or Korean Fried Chicken and Beer)
Welcome to our second serving of Have You Eaten? For those who missed last month’s post the idea behind this new monthly food/snack/drink segment is to create a space in which we can discuss the dramas that featured the chosen food/drink of the month and made us crave it. Particularly memorable moments in dramas that featured it, recipes, personal anecdotes about cooking or eating it, pics, mukbang, reviews of store bought versions, basically whatever you can think of relating to it. This month our focus snack Chimaek (치맥) comes in two parts, Korean Fried Chicken and Beer, a delicious and beloved combo. You might love them together or separately but there’s no denying when you see them in a drama, you often find yourself craving them too. A Brief History of Chimaek Let’s start by discussing the etymology of the portmanteau chimaek! If you’re from an English language background and you’ve spent any time attempting to learn Korean you’ve probably found that food/beverage names are the easiest as there are a bunch of English loan words and patterns in naming. When it comes to chimaek it’s a pretty obvious one to break down. This slang term takes the ‘chi’ from chikin (fried chicken) and the ‘maek’ from maekju (beer) to become chimaek. It first appeared around the time of the 2002 Soccer World Cup, a time considered to be “peak chimaek”. While neither fried chicken nor beer originated in Korea, they’ve managed to turn the two into their own classic combination. It is believed that the dish spread from US soldier bases, slowly growing in popularity after cooking oil was introduced in the early 1970’s. The first restaurants appeared in the late 1970’s and the market continued to grow over time. As a result of the late 1990’s IMF crisis in Asia many individuals who lost their jobs opened fried chicken restaurants. The next major growth period was the previously mentioned 2002 Soccer World Cup by the end of which the number of fried chicken restaurants in Korea grew exponentially. In 2013, wildly popular Korean drama, My Love From Another Star brought the craze to the world starting with China. In fact, the drama is credited with single-handedly saving the Chinese poultry industry after the avian flu had caused a severe decrease in people eating poultry. There are currently more than 87,000 fried chicken restaurants in South Korea! Korean Fried Chicken Korean fried chicken is a little different to its original source as it has evolved to cater to the Korean palate. For more information on how it’s made here is a video from the company who first added seasoning sauce to the dish to make it easier and more delicious to devour. There are a few different styles -
Half-half - banban (반반) originally shortened from yangnyeom ban, huraideu ban now used to describe any combination of two flavours.
Korean Fried Chicken is most commonly served with pickled radishes, known as “chicken radish” or chikin mu (치킨무) and beer - maekju (맥주) or carbonated non-alcoholic beverages. Which Dramas Have had Memorable Chimaek Scenes in Them for you? Thinking of dramas with high quality chimaek scenes is a little tougher because they are literally everywhere so most of mine are more recent watches rather than being truly memorable moments so I’m looking forward to hearing those that stuck with you - Many dramas have set out to teach us that eating compatibility is one of the most important things to consider in a relationship and you should only dine with those with agreeable palates. Cinderella and the Four Knights highlighted the importance of choosing a partner based on chicken limb preference and it is pure genius. Seriously everybody, update your online dating profiles today. Radiant Office taught me that opening a chicken shop is an option many people consider when everything else falls apart. While The Sound of Your Heart highlighted the importance of using ethically sourced domestic chickens. When it comes to eating, Let’s Eat taught me even if everything goes against you, eventually you will get your fried chicken moment, you might just have to wait a while. If you are really lucky you may come across a unicorn like Lee Soo Kyung who will let you eat all the drumsticks AND wings you can handle. But usually what’s memorable is just me dying of envy over the product placement. Everyone’s current favourite Crash Landing on You taught me that if I ever find myself in Pyongyang it’s still possible to enjoy chimaek, just not BBQ Chicken brand chimaek. Be Melodramatic taught me just how hard it is to get that desired PPL moment in the first place. Last but definitely not least is Man x Man which may be the ultimate chicken lover’s drama of all, featuring both types of KFC, Korean and Kentucky fried. Park Sung Woong really sold his addiction and in turn sent me loopy with cravings. What’s Your go to Order? Have you had any Memorable Chimaek Moments? Fortunately, thanks to my Queen Jun Ji Hyun, Korean Fried Chicken is fairly easy to source. Otherwise, I might have to consider deep frying my own and honestly that is an emergency call waiting to happen. When it comes to ordering the fact that half ‘n half exists is such a blessing for all the indecisive people out there, including me. Apart from the Fried Chicken with Snow Cheese (aka Powdered Cheese Hell) I had at a music festival in Korea, which was a plate of mild food regrets, every flavour I’ve had has been amazing. Sadly, though, despite being able to get perfectly fine Korean fried chicken, I can’t get the Korean fried chicken of my dreams, NeNe Chicken’s creamy onion chicken. Here’s my chicken story (you may have heard it before): The year was 2019, I was living my best life and travelling to the land where fried chicken dreams come true. During my stay my Weekly Binge friend and co-conspirator u/MerinoMedia was flying in to join me for a weekend of food, drama sight-seeing and more food. She’d told me to wait to eat fried chicken together and demanded we get Seventeen’s 네네치킨, I was happy to oblige. We took our chimaek to a drama hotspot, Ilsan Lake Park for a super late lunch picnic and it didn’t take more than a sip of beer (mostly because we gave up drinking it because it was in serious need of soju to make it drinkable) before we were serenading the locals with a beautiful rendition of Love is the Moment. As for the fried chicken we ordered half creamy onion half seasoned, all delicious. The creamy onion chicken was especially good, a combination that should be gross, but is somehow perfect. After Merry left me I ordered it once more before returning home and ate it for days (it’s even great for breakfast but the onions will stink out your life). When I found out that NeNe chicken did have franchises in Australia it was a real emotional roller-coaster, because for some tragic reason they don’t stock the best flavour here. I did try another company’s version while in Sydney but it just wasn’t the same. Alas. Will I ever have that recipe again? What’s the Next Course? Our March focus still needs to be decided! This month we will be voting between three different foods/drinks, banana milk, bibimbap (mixed rice), and tteokbokki (spicy stir fried rice cakes). PLEASE VOTE FOR YOUR FAVOURITE HERE. I’ll leave the vote open for a week and then make an announcement on the following weekend wrap up post. Our next post will be on the 29th of March. Until then we’d love to hear your experiences whether they are limited to drooling over chimaek be it simply on screen or more in the comments below. A big thank you tou/MerinoMediaandu/AlohaAlex who gave up their free time to read through my first draft (which was a low key hot mess) and increase the quality! Also to Merry for being my number 1 Korean fried chicken girl and to Aloha for making two of these gifs (the really good ones - for more see dramagifs). <333 Dramas featured in this post not mentioned by name:Father is Strange, Best Chicken, Reply 1994, Something About 1%, Heirs, and Missing 9. Since you made it this far here's a picture of me preparing for this post, jk, here's a real one ^^

Filming the B-side East’s MV! Although my arms burned that way under the hot outdoors filming Pabbit that’s excited because he thinks Stay will like it a lot 🐖 🐇 As the title suggests, I hope everything goes as easily as Stays hope!! I wanna have our comeback faster ㅜㅜ I miss our Stays loud fan featuring (Changbin)
Hyunjin’s Diary, after filming the music video until dawn, I fell asleep right after in the morning. As a team that released 4 albums per year, this period that was empty was a little tough. It’s been half a year since we last saw Stay and the planned schedules were cancelled, honestly I suddenly had a hard time because of it. It felt like I was falling behind others while staying at home, there was really nothing I could do,I missed the stage and I missed Stays. It was so tough, I placed my emotions into the SkzPlayer choreos while making choreographies at the company, I think I was obsessed with not resting and wanting to do something no matter what. I felt this while feeling down by myself and heading to the skzplayer filming site. If I don’t show anything, it’ll be tough if the things I worked hard for doesn’t show. For me who is still lacking, I think I was holding on tightly hence I was really obsessive in getting recognition. One of the reasons of this story is because I’m feeling excited from expectations for this comeback, and when I think that now I can see you all, it makes me smile again. It would be nice if the time to perform on stages before Stays would come quickly (Hyunjin)
STAY Hello~ Are you doing well today too? Recently it's hot in the day and cold in the night it'll be nice if you would carry extra clothing with you while going around~ Today I had the reality show's filming! It's a reality show I'm filming in a while so I was excited and it was fun~ I really wanna show the reality show we filmed today but.. It'll be nice if the day we can hurry and talk with STAY about the reality show we filmed after a long time comes. I miss you STAY!~~~ (Han)
STAY! We came to film 타 Today on 23rd May! STAY what are you doing to pass days by..? Today's the 24th of May! It's a Sunday 😀 I just settled everything throughout the day and just came into the room in the dorm. Yesterday '타' filming ended after the sun was up so I took a short nap in the bright morning!! I slept for a while and woke up then had dance practice for a while, I ate JJamppong and Tangsuyuk with I.N for lunch 👍 Also to face Stay in a better way I had classes with our vocal trainer and used lots of time to practice by myself! In the afternoon, I went working out with Changbin hyung and I.N, the three of us like this 😄 I need to go wash up after sweating a lot but I want to hurry and meet Stay in a good mood and sweat from the performance haha!! Tomorrow will be filming for GO Live so I'll hurry to wash up and leave, hope Stay have a good day too!!!!! (seungmin)
Stay! It's Monday 25th May! Today we cam to film 'GO Live' and 'God's Menu'. The weather was good and we filmed many interesting things so it was fun! Stay bye! (I.N)
STAY~ it's Chan-nie kk Today I spent a really powerful (him-chan) fruitful (al-chan) Bang Chan kind of day. Yesterday night while producing I went to the 'Blueprint' filming schedule right after, the song was really bright so the filming atmosphere was very good and it was really fun kkk it was a little wasted that it started raining halfway through the filming but it was still nice! After finishing filming, I went back to the company with the members, practiced TOP's choreography and did Chan's Room after that too! Thank you our many Stay for coming to watch it kkk SKZ who are always working hard everyday! If it's for Stay we are prepared for all kkkk See you again! (Bang Chan)
27th May, Weather: Clear. STAY~~ It's Lee Know!!!! Today there was a TOP stage filming! I'm excited about how much STAY will like this when it's released and I really wanna hurry and show it 🤟I'll be working hard in preparing until the day STAY can see this writing!! Let's hurry and meet~~~~ (Lee Know)
Yesterday after the trailer was revealed I went to sleep with an excited heart for about two hours and woke up, after finishing filming for our reality show I had vocal practice and returned to the dorm at about 11pm! Memories of Season 1 of were coming back, I was just as excited for the first filming of the God edition. I did very fun games together with the members so the long filming went past very fast! Thinking about Stay who will watch it happily while laughing puts me in a good mood hehe The comeback date was revealed too there's not much left till comeback!!! (changbin)
Hyunjin's Diary - We woke up at 7 and went to Incheon. The weather was so bright that it was blinding my eyes. Hm it was too warm to be cold and too cool to be hot..? The weather was really nice Today's filming of Blueprint was really exciting and the song has energy overflowing. It was a cooling song done after a long time so I think Stay will like it a lot. This time we took lots of videos, honestly it was a little tough but I think I'll see that I did well when looking at the video in the future and I felt relieved after filming ended. We played with firecrackers towards the end of the filming, it's been a few years since I played so I was excited.. I was amazed hehe Now I'm in the car that's heading to the practice room again. We're heading to the practice room to spend the last part of our day there. I had fun filming and ended it excitedly. I want to hurry and get back to practice more of God's Menu hehe Well then that's all for today. (Hyunjin)
Everyone, today was really hot ㅜㅜ Spring is really leaving and summer seems to be here.. ㅜㅜ But still the comeback date is near, we're getting busier from doing this and that, it's starting to feel real. I'm also excited, you all must be very excited then?? keke Today we filmed the Intro video, as it's the fill length album, once it's released we'll explain what kind of album it is, what songs are in it and detailed explanations so watch it lots and lots when it's out~ please expect it~ Something about the sky today was pretty when I looked with my eyes, as expected the camera can't fit everything in... So there's no stars but I decorated a little with my finger heart.. is it okay..? keke I hope everyone does well~ Stays you've worked hard today too, I'll have expectations for us to quickly comeback and so that you can see us on the stage~ Good night STAY~ (Han)
Today's the 31st of May~ We filmed the intro and talked about Stay a lot today so I had lots of thoughts of waiting to hurry onto the stage and wanting to see you! What are our lovely Stay doing to pass time..? It's tough because of the fickly weather these days right? ㅠㅠ Let's meet during a good weather!! (Felix)
First day of June! It's June 1st! We're finally in the comeback month hoho the excitement in my heart seems to be growing slowly 😊 Today too!! We came form FSKZ's filming ✌️ We were busy from the morning but as much as that, it was filming that was fun and esciting to play around!! Everytime we film one episode, I think the expectation for the next one increases kekekeke I want to show it to Stays as soon as possible heh! I'm now managing what I did during the day before sleeping, I have to head out earlier tomorrow too so I'll hurry and end this and head to rest!! Stay too, it'ss be nice if you slept well and I'll get going too! kekeke Goodbye!!! (Seungmin)
Hello Stay, today is June 2nd! Today we did a Japan live in the morning, today's live in the morning was very fun too, it's very amazing to think that we are appearing on Japan TV. Also today, TOP's performance video is revealed for the first time, how was it? I like the TOP choreography! Next time we perform TOP on stage I'll be sure to practice more and I'll remember to make it cooler! Thanks for watching us today too, I'm feeling this as I write but I wanna hurry and perform our comeback stage ㅠㅠ Stay let's meet again soon! (I.N)
Stay! Channie is here kk We really did a lot today too! Today, we did a relay dance live to show our Stay us dancing on a live broadcast kk It was also our first time doing it like that, and I was very thankful that our Stay liked it kkk And today!! The happiest news! Our SKZ placed 1st on Oricon!!!! ㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠ It still hasn't hit me that we placed 1st on the Oricon Chart with our music ㅠㅠ I think this miraculous event is of course thanks to our Stay and the many people who listened to our music ㅠ In order to continue showing more through creating music, I am going to go work right now also following the conclusion of Chan's room~ Thank you always! Bye~ (Bang Chan)
June 4th weather is too sunny 35° Today we woke up at 2:30AM and filmed ! But the weather was too hot so I think my face will get really burnt ㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠ But we played games and had really delicious food, so it was really fun I hope Stay will also have fun watching 😊Enjoy your day today, STAY! (Lee Know)
Today we recorded doubling and are finishing up in preparation to meet Stay!! I was only able to eat one meal because the timing didn't work out with a broadcasting station meeting, lessons, practice, and recording, but because I am full from Stay's live, I am stopping myself from eating a late night meal. Going to go work out with I.N!! (Changbin)
Today I slept in for the first time in a while and was woken up by Seungmin. After showering, I practiced the songs I was recording, and then I recorded. Until now, even if I had free time, I usually worked on music or practiced, but today I'm taking the courage to rest a bit. I came home for a bit and met my parents, and after spending some time with Kkami, I'm going to return to practice at night. It feels slightly awkward because I am resting for the first time in a while, so I am sitting somewhat restlessly, but I'm going to go eat something delicious kkk Our schedules start again tomorrow so I'm going to eat a moderate amount and return to go practice! (Hyunjin)
Today is so hot Stay. I was a little taken aback because summer suddenly came kk Yesterday afternoon it was hot and humid even when I was going to the convenience store ㅜㅜ Everyone, water and iced americano are musts. But if possible, drink water instead of coffee. As it has become summer and the sun is up for longer, it feels like each day has really gotten longer. We are spending each of these longer days practicing and working hard for our comeback~ We are really working hard on preparing because we want to impress more than ever~ We are looking forward to it just as much as Stay kkk Right now I'm in the car on the way to another schedule I think all schedules these days are exciting. Of course there are times when I'm tired, but thinking that good results can become gifts for Stay, I work really hard every moment. Stay must be working hard on each of your own lives right now, right..? As much as you all are cheering us on, we are also cheering Stay on, so I sincerely hope you can also be strong. As I keep writing like this, I want to hurry and make our comeback and see you ㅜㅜ Ahh time, go quickly~~~~!!!kkk Everyone, you have worked hard today as well~ Be happy tomorrow also, and have an energetic day!!! (Han)
June 8th! Today I practiced choreography with the SKZ members at the company building in preparation for the showcase~ As we prepare, I wonder how Stays will feel when they see this! The God's Menu choreo is very cool and very new ~~~ When I came home, Ryan was waiting very comfortably on my chair, so it was a bit heartwarming~~^ (Felix)
The day finally ended! Today was a bit crazy since the morning as we did a lot. First of all, we SKZ joined the Save the Children international partnership sponsor bracelet campaign! We introduced Save the Children and the international partnership sponsoring to more people, interviews, tried on the bracelets, and enjoyed taking photos with the members. As much love as we receive, I think we got an opportunity to also give back to many people, so I felt very proud! And then we went and filmed Studio CHOOM for the first time in a while~ We danced God's Menu several times, and every time we monitored it, I thought that I wanted to hurry and show STAY. DduDduDduDduDduDdu!!! After working hard on dancing we returned to the company building and worked hard on filming the fan featuring video, which is our assignment for Stay!! and our gift kk I guess maknae I.N was tired because he went out earlier than use to go to school in the morning, and he looked cute falling asleep, so I took a photo ㅜㅜ kk And we filmed the fan featuring this time in a slightly different way so it was a little more fun kkk It's not that hard this time, so I hope Stay will follow along well!! We had a jam-packed day again today. If course we ate healthy meals in the middle~ I hope our Stay will also make sure to eat healthily. Then I'm going to go prepare for tomorrow now~!! I will sleep well!!! Hope Stay will also sleep well kk! (Seungmin ft I.N)
Today June 10th, we had our Dispatch HD photoshoot! We had a photoshoot and filmed videos and it was fun. But I think the weather has really gotten hot these days... As it gets hotter, you have to be careful of catching a cold because if you turn on the AC strongly because it's hot, it's only a matter of time before you catch a cold. We also had a Vlive at Dispatch today and I was very surprised because Hyunjinnie hyung and seungminnie hyung gave quite big spoilers, but it was a relief because it seemed like Stay didn't really know kk There's really only week left until the comeback now I'm so excited💕 I want to hurry and make our comeback sososos x100 much See you soon! (I.N)
Stay~ ChannieChannie is here again kk The Blueprint video is being released at midnight tonight and I wish it would come quickly ㅠ Lots of very blue scenes can be seen in Blueprint and I'll show photos that I took in set to. show Stay~ Today I worked out, worked on music, and helped Hyunjin with recording! I took it easy while having a productive day and I am waiting for Blueprint kkk Next week is already the comeback, and we are continuing to work hard on preparing now also! See you late~ (Bang Chan)
I wonder what Stay is doing ~_~ Today we filmed a Mu:fully Knock Knock Knock video I think Stay will really like it kkkkkkkkkk I secretly took a photo of Yongbok and Seungmin during a short break They probably don't even know that their picture will be posted, but I'm going to post it anyway 🤡🤡🤡🤡 But the weather is too hotttt Stay should turn on the AC strongly indoors and have a blanket on^ Because it will be bad if you get heat exhaustion! Then bye for now (Lee Know ft Felix, Seungmin)
Had various outfit fittings for the comeback showcase and finished working on a song with OO It's the first song I made together discussing with OO, so I was a little worried, but the song production was completed much more easily than expected I also really like the song I hope Stay can listen to it soon There are only 4 days until the comeback, but I'm looking forward to the comeback so so much to the point that I want to make a comeback tomorrow I think our Stay must feel the same way hh I am feeling even more greatly these days how valuable music, the stage, and Stay are to me ㅜㅜ (Changbin)
It's 3:17AM right now. As the comeback approaches, I am looking forward to it more, but I also can't fall asleep easily because I'm nervous. I'm going to end my day by watching the teaser that was released at midnight. I wonder how it must be for Stay if even I'm waiting this much for the comeback... so I wish the 16th would just appear in front of my eyes now. I was at the company building almost all day with a Japanese lesson in the morning, practice, and then working on music, but time passed by really quickly. I recorded the song that I worked on with OO and I had lots of worries, but the theme is fun and more than anything, OO and I had good teamwork, so I think we were able to complete production enjoyably. There's really only 2 days left and I'm so nervous. Maybe because it has been a while, but my mind is all over the place. I miss Stay.. I'm going to pray that we can meet soon before I sleep 😊 Then bye for now (Hyunjin)
Today we had our final practice for the online Unveil!! There's really not even two days left, so we all worked really hard while sweating to match our formations and choreography as much as possible! I think I'm so nervous because we're performing for the first time in a while.. When just the date was confirmed, I couldn't really feel it But as the time approaches, it feels like it's exploding like 'bang!!' kk And maybe because we practiced with the dancer hyungs, but the practice room felt more full than usual. The mirrors also fogged up so I felt 'Ooh..We really did work quite hard?' And we received the album, and the material? The album shape? is different from our previous albums! Our Stay will also know when you receive the album, it's super pretty~ haha Ah~ I'm getting really impatient, the song this time is really different so I'm having the useless concern of will our Stay like it? ㅜ After the song God's Menu is released, I hope our Stay will really become addicted to it like malatang while listening and continuously savour the song~~ There's not much time left!! So I will be hwaiting today also and go now!! Hwaiting!!!!!! (Han)
June 16th, it's Chan Bang day! It's a shame today is the last day of SKZ Diary ㅠㅠ Until now, we took lots of photos and wrote, and I feel very happy because I think Stay will like it~~ Although we cannot meet in person, we prepared it because we think it will be a gift for Stay, so please enjoy reading our diary^ Stay! Read our last SKZ Diary today and look forward to our comeback on 6/17 a lot~!^ See you soon~~ (Felix ft SKZ) #SKZ_Diary - Skz Diary The End
Other common toppings for bibimbap include mushrooms (sliced and sautéd), bellflower roots (doraji – soaked and sautéd), sukju namul(bean sprouts), mu saengchae (radish salad), onion (sliced and sautéd), lettuce leaves, sliced kimchi, and so on. 1. What Goes Inside BiBimBap? Bibimbap is a dish that features a variety of different vegetables which can range from mushrooms, carrots, radishes, spinach, and radishes. Each one is pickled in a solution of sesame oil and salt and is sauteed till they are nice and tender. Check out our recipe to make some Bibimbap for yourself! Die Zutaten: 4 EL Gochujang (koreanische Chilipaste, gibt es in unterschiedlichen Schärfegraden) 2 EL Sesamöl geröstet; 2 EL brauner Bibimbap never comes in a size smaller than huge, which is good, because the real pleasure of it isn't in the first mouthfuls. It's in the way the warmth and flavours draw you in, deeper and deeper. What is Bimbimbap. Bibimbap is a bowl of steamed rice served with various vegetables (fresh or sautéed), some protein (red meat, chicken, tuna or tofu) and the sauce. To eat, you first mix all the ingredients with a spoon thoroughly. I have two bibimbap recipes here if you want to see them visually. Bibimbap Bowls – Yes, Gochujang Sauce is also known as Bibimbap Sauce. Essential with classic Bibimbap but also good with any other kind of rice bowl! Drizzle all over for an easy and delicious flavor boost. Dip – use as a dip for simple crudites — cucumbers, tomatoes, carrots, shishito peppers, etc. Along with kimchi, bibimbap takes its place among the favored foods in Korean cuisine. Literally meaning 'mixed rice,' it's a popular meal consisting of white rice topped with vegetables, beef, a whole egg, and gochujang (red chili pepper paste). What is Bibimbap? Bibimbap simply translates to “mixed rice with meat and assorted vegetables“. You can make endless variations to this dish depending on your preference and dietary requirements (e.g. microgreens bibimbap) and also based on the dish/bowl it is served in (e.g. dolsot bibimbap and yangpun bibimbap). A rice bowl topped with all sorts of seasoned sautéed vegetables, marinated meat (usually beef), a fried egg sunny side up, finished with a sprinkle of sesame and generous dollop of a sweet-spicy-savoury Bibimbap sauce. <- Heads up, this sauce is so awesome, you can basically use any vegetables and any meat and your Bibimbap is going to be delish! I love bibimbap. It’s a bowl of rice topped with veggies (some are seasoned and sauteed) an egg, and (usually) pepper paste. This dish has many variations and it’s rarely the same from place to place. The vegetables are sometimes different. Some places serve it in a hot stone bowl; some don’t.
